Our investigators are most successful when you provide as much information as possible about the facts – who, what, when, where, how, and why.
To report Social Security fraud (related to Social Security programs and operations, including disability or retirement benefits, Supplemental Security Income, misuse of benefits by a representative payee, Social Security number, Social Security employees) provide the following information about the alleged suspect(s) and/or victims:
- Name
- Address
- Telephone numbers
- Date of birth
- Social Security Number(s)
Although you may remain anonymous, we encourage you to provide your contact information so we may reach you if we need more information to evaluate or pursue your allegation.
Confidential status allows communication between OIG personnel and the complainant after the original allegation is received. Our policy is to honor requests for confidentiality and not to release any data that would identify an individual unless required to do so by order of the law (e.g., court order/subpoena).
OIG staff will carefully log and review your allegation and take appropriate action. We determine whether to obtain additional information, open a case, refer the matter to SSA or another federal agency, or close the allegation. Your allegation may also result in the opening of audits, reviews, or investigations on a broader scale.
If you provided your contact information, an analyst or investigator may contact you to obtain more information.
We do not provide information regarding what action we have taken on any allegation or provide “status” updates. Please note, federal regulations protect the disclosure of information contained in law enforcement records, even to the individual making the allegation.
